High/Low: Lanvin for H&M

2 Nov

The full collection of Lanvin for H&M was released today, and judging by this video it is going to be gorgeous!

I remember when I was in college and the first high/low mash-up came on the scene – Stella McCartney for H&M. My friends and I raced downtown and snatched up silk dresses and skirts, amazed at the high quality for such a mass retailer. These pieces are still sought after on eBay (I thought about selling my silk wrap dress after a particularly debt-filled month but have held off).

The Stella partnership ushered in the age of the designer collaboration, and retailers like H&M and Target introduced the masses to Karl Lagerfeld, Proenza Schouler, Behnaz Sarafpour, Paul & Joe, Matthew Williamson and Rodarte. I love these partnerships but somewhere along the way the quality deteriorated and those clothes began to feel really cheesy. As if the designer in question was saying, I can slap my name on this Made in China monstrosity and mass hysteria will ensue and everyone will buy it because I am a DESIGNER.

However, the upcoming Lanvin for H&M collaboration looks to be turning the tide and making well made, fashionable clothes.

Dress: $249 Pink necklace: $39.95

Dress: $249 Shoes: $99

T-shirt: $39.95 Skirt: $59.95 Jacket: $149 Shoes: $99 Necklace: $29.95 Belt worn as necklace: $19.95 Sunglasses: $19.95

Although I can’t attest to the quality since the collection does not hit stores until November 20th, the campaign leading up to the debut has been stellar. First H&M teased devotees about which designer it would be collaborating with – many speculated it would be Bottega Venetta’s turn on the high street. Then Lanvin released a few images, then a video and now there are photos of the full collection with prices. One of the best parts about this collaboration is that there are designs for men too!

Along with several other friends I will be lining up to try on these Lanvin beauties, perfect for a holiday party or three. Let’s hope that Lanvin raises the bar for these collaborations once more and puts an end to the bargain basement frenzy.

Here is the adorable Alber Elbaz, discussing the partnership
