Vive Le Macaron!

Recently my Portugese traveling buddy Emily went to Paris for work, and generously sent me a box of Ladurée macarons.  Ladurée is world renowned for their delectable sweets, but are most famous for inventing the macaron – a little doubledecker cookie that sets my heart aflutter.

I squealed with delight when I received the package! They were everything a macaron should be; delicate, light, flavorful and infused with essences of caramel, chocolate, pistachio, and more. My favorite is the rose, which has a subtle perfume that makes it unlike any other sweet I’ve ever had…

I was in Paris a few years ago and staying right by the legendary Pierre Herme, which is filled with more avant garde macarons then Ladurée, but no less delicious.  Despite other macaron shops, there is something about the classical Ladurée confection that is irresistible and almost cultish in its lore.

Ladurée Harrods

Ladurée has a famous no photo taking policy, a fact I learned the hard way when I was at the Harrods outpost in London. My friend Katy and I were visiting some friends and got separated from them. With no cell phone or means of contact, we hid out in Harrods for at least four hours, wandering the food halls and waiting until someone from our group located us. We spent half that time relaxing in Ladurée, having a patisserie feast and an inadvertent $40 salad. When we tried to take snaps of all the delicious treats, our waitress rebuked us! Quelle embarrassé! Luckily our party found us just before we were escorted out.

A Good Macaron is Hard to Find

Unfortunately despite macarons’ status as “the next cupcake” a good version stateside is hard to find and pales in comparison to a Ladurée confection. I guess I will just have to travel to Paris (mom, hint hint) soon to experience the real thing again. Until then there are a few macaron purveyors worth trying along the eastern seaboard, but none come as close Ladurée.
